PNSW Race 9, Teralba, 5th August 2017

Nick’s Report

Marathon Series Round 9 began with a medical emergency, which demonstrated the “Paddling Fraternity’s” compassionate side. Any Club rivalries were swept aside as many co-operated to ensure that usual Competitor, Ray, was well looked after. Though an Ambulance attended promptly, hospitalisation was not required, thankfully!
There were some lively wind gusts, but, it was a good day to be alive and paddling! Thanks to all the “Organisers”, with Anne Cowper stepping in “run the Office” – thanks Anne!
Central Coast Paddlers (formally CCCC) was represented by nine Members, with Paul Carter, 2nd in Div 3, Anne Moore, 3rd in Div 7, and Owen Walton, also 3rd in Div 12.
Max had a mechanical failure just before the start, so was only able to complete three laps (of 4).
I felt the weight of towing five craft for most of the distance, while
seeing the leading craft disappear ahead! The second craft was just too strong, and I could not hold out two more that “pounced” at the finish!
Thank you to all who contributed to a good day!

Owen’s Report
The shallow waters of Cockle Creek were of great advantage to the K1 and specialist racing boats, whilst being a bit of a curse for the ski and doubles paddlers. The gusty winds also created a few “moments” for some, as did the rebounding wash from passing boats on this narrow waterway. However for the 130 odd competitors it was still a great day, with the sun shining making it more like a spring day.

Generally, all the CCP entrants had reasonable results and all I spoke to after the race seemed well satisfied with their performance. Personally, I found the downstream leg tough as it took us close to the western shore and the shallows; this resulted in me being a little below par and finished 3rd, behind Sue and Larry of the HVPC. Annie was happy with her performance in her K1, also coming in 3rd in Div 7.

Amongst the other CCP paddlers Paul Carter was 2nd in Div 3 with Mick Carroll in his new K1 coming in 7th. In Div 8 Steve Hill and Ross Fraser suffered a bit from “long boat syndrome” coming in midway in fleet. In Div 10 Nick came in 5th only 2 minutes behind the winner, with Jim Buckland a further 4 minutes back. In Div 6 Max Lyons is listed as a DNF, – he had a delayed start but seemed to be moving well mid race.

The coveted “Nemo Award” went to local HVPC paddler, Greg Hillier, who decided to take a quick dip in the Creek, before getting back into his K1 and finishing a credible 7th.

Unfortunately, BWP member Ray Weekes had a “turn” prior to the race. He had already decided not to race, due to flu symptoms, and an uncomfortable night. Concerned wife Gina withdrew from the race, to care for him and take him home. I believe he is resting ok at home this evening.
