CCCC Winter Series Race 1, 2nd July 2017

The morning of the first race in our Winter Series was the coldest for a long time, but a lovely day followed!
Rob McIntire, from Avoca Kayak Club was first back, and also had fastest time. He was followed closely by Paul Stone, then Aidan Shipton, who had his best time in four years. In a return to form, Gina finished just in front of husband Ray Weekes. Improving Avoca Kayak Club ski paddler, Scott Cunningham eclipsed his previous PB, set five years ago, by a minute!
Newy Paddlers’ Russell Brown and Sally Verheul smashed their previous PB by two minutes! David Hopkins is continuing his improvement, Shannon Hile recorded his best time in a year!
HVPC President, Ray Baxter, set a new PB, as did our Cam Tunbridge. Steve Hill and Ross Fraser were happy to get close to their PB. Secretary Nick had his best time for a year – without wash riding! Piloting their sleek Double Dragon, Jack and Jenny Ward are a model of consistency lately, finishing just five seconds under “Handicap Finish Time!” Clive Adams was just four seconds over! Jim Buckland suffered the mandatory one minute penalty for his win last race, – undeterred, he paddled his fastest time for a year! Anne Moore, Mick Carroll, and Lyn Tunbridge were close behind. Newy’s Marni Kay and Darren Forbes were trying out a new K2, and Marg and Rob Cook are continuing their HCC campaign. Newy’s Ian Davey did not repeat his extraordinary performance recorded early this year, so he will be looking to find that form again!
“First Timers” – Newy’s Malcolm Lewis – Mirage 580s, and Yvonne Wolseley – TK1, romped home in the 7,5km section, followed by AKC’s Lochlan Jonquires who chewed over two minutes from his previous best! Our Owen Walton finished right on Handicap Finish Time!
As usual, Timekeepers Diana and Margaret did another great job! After a bite to eat, and a cuppa, President Steve congratulated the Placegetters, and did the draw for a $30 Voucher from Clarence Hines’ Kayak Sports and Hire – won by Sally Verheul, with the usual luck y Prize going to Yvonne Wolseley. We packed up quickly, and adjourned to Wyong Bowling Club for the Club’s AGM.
